The Worthing Express is an independent news and information site for Worthing and this part of the West Sussex coast. We work from public records, we link to them, and we are not connected to any of the councils involved.

Where we cover

Worthing itself, with Goring, Durrington, Broadwater, Tarring and Findon Valley, comes under Worthing Borough Council. Lancing, Sompting, Shoreham-by-Sea and Southwick are in Adur District. Littlehampton, Rustington and East Preston are in Arun. Worthing and Adur share much of their staff and administration while remaining two separate councils, which confuses people reasonably often, so we name the responsible authority in every story and on every reference page. West Sussex County Council runs roads, schools and social care throughout.

What we report

Each council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood and coastal warnings for the Adur and the seafront, and company filings in The Gazette. Seafront schemes, coastal defence and the state of the town centres come up repeatedly, and all of them are decided on paper first. Where the Downs meet the built-up edge, national park planning rules can apply, and we say when they do.

How we work

Every fact is tied to a named source and linked. Where a record is ambiguous we say so rather than picking the more interesting reading. Plain British English, no press releases printed as reporting, and no photographs taken from other outlets.
